Technical note

This guide supports procurement discussion and does not replace the approved design code, materials-engineering review or project specification. Verify the current edition of every referenced standard.

The certificate supports traceability

A material test certificate records declared material identity and test results for the supplied product under the applicable specification and inspection-document type. It should connect the document to the material through heat, lot or other specified identifiers.

A certificate is only useful when reviewed against the purchase order, product markings and governing standard. It does not independently prove fitness for an unspecified service.

  • Match supplier, manufacturer, product, grade and dimensions.
  • Check heat or lot identity against the material marking.
  • Review chemistry, mechanical and required supplementary results.
  • Confirm authorised validation and inspection-document type.

EN 10204 document types

EN 10204 defines types of inspection documents for metallic products. The required type should be agreed before order placement because it affects verification, release and document flow.

Project-specific third-party witnessing, PMI or additional reports are separate requirements unless explicitly incorporated.

/ TECHNICAL FAQS

Common buyer questions.

Is an MTC the same as a certificate of conformity?+

No. Their content and verification basis differ. Specify the required inspection document.

What is a 3.1 certificate?+

It is an EN 10204 inspection-document type with specific validation requirements; consult the current standard and contract for exact obligations.

Does PMI replace an MTC?+

No. PMI is a verification tool and does not normally replace the complete certified test record.
