This guide supports procurement discussion and does not replace the approved design code, materials-engineering review or project specification. Verify the current edition of every referenced standard.
Manufacturing route is only one decision
Seamless pipe is produced without a longitudinal weld seam. Welded pipe is formed from strip or plate and joined by a controlled welding process. Both routes can be appropriate when manufactured, inspected and accepted to the correct standard.
The design code, product specification, size, wall, service, inspection and availability should drive the selection—not a blanket assumption that one route is always superior.
- State whether the project explicitly requires seamless or permits welded construction.
- Identify the applicable product standard and current edition.
- Define any additional NDT, heat treatment or weld requirements.
Commercial and dimensional considerations
Availability varies by material, outside diameter, wall thickness and quantity. Welded construction can offer broad size coverage, especially at larger diameters, while seamless availability is tied to mill manufacturing ranges.
Compare total compliance: material condition, tolerances, testing, certificates, delivery and approved manufacturer requirements.
Route comparison
| Factor | Seamless | Welded |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | No longitudinal seam | Formed and longitudinally joined |
| Size availability | Depends on mill piercing and finishing range | Can be broad, including larger diameters |
| Inspection focus | Body, ends, dimensions and material properties | Body, weld, ends, dimensions and material properties |
| Selection basis | Design and purchase specification | Design and purchase specification |
| RFQ detail | Grade, standard, OD/NPS, wall/schedule, ends, tests | Same, plus applicable weld-route requirements |
Common buyer questions.
Is seamless pipe automatically stronger?+
Not automatically. Allowable design values and acceptance depend on the governing code, grade, dimensions, manufacturing standard and joint factors where applicable.
Can welded pipe be used for pressure service?+
Many product standards cover welded pressure pipe. Use is subject to the design code, approved piping specification and required inspection.
What does EFW mean?+
Electric fusion welded pipe is a welded construction route commonly used for larger-diameter or heavier-wall requirements, subject to the specified standard.
