This guide supports procurement discussion and does not replace the approved design code, materials-engineering review or project specification. Verify the current edition of every referenced standard.
A standard defines a controlled scope
ASTM standards can address materials, products, test methods, practices and classifications. A product specification sets requirements within its scope, but it does not replace the design code, dimensional standard or project specification.
Always verify the current applicable edition and whether the purchase order invokes supplementary requirements. Editions should not be mixed casually across project documents.
- Use the complete designation, including metric suffix where specified.
- Check product form and manufacturing route within the scope.
- Identify referenced test methods and supplementary requirements.
- Resolve conflicts through the project document hierarchy.
From designation to purchase description
A complete description combines the product specification with grade, dimensions, condition, quantity, testing and documentation. For example, naming a stainless pipe specification without size, schedule, construction and grade leaves major decisions undefined.
ASME adoption of an ASTM specification may carry an SA designation. The project code and purchase specification determine which designation and edition apply.
Document roles
| Document | Typical purpose | Buyer action |
|---|---|---|
| Product/material standard | Manufacture, chemistry, properties and tests | Confirm scope and grade |
| Dimensional standard | OD, wall, tolerances and geometry | State size series |
| Design code | System design and allowable use | Follow engineer-approved basis |
| Project specification | Additional owner/EPC requirements | Include with RFQ |
| Inspection plan | Verification and witness sequence | Agree before production |
Common buyer questions.
Does ASTM approval mean a product is suitable for any pressure?+
No. Suitability is determined by the design code, material, dimensions, temperature and approved system design.
What does an M suffix mean?+
It generally identifies an SI-unit version or combined SI treatment in the designation; follow the exact standard and order units.
Should the latest edition always be used?+
Use the edition required by the contract, code and project documents. Confirm changes before substituting an edition.
